February Fishing Opportunities in Seattle
During February, we continue chasing Blackmouth (Winter King/Chinook salmon) while larger, more mature Chinook salmon begin filtering into the Puget Sound. Fishing conditions during February may be cold, but if you can tough it out you will be rewarded with some quality fish, both in size and taste.
Blackmouth/Chinook Salmon Fishing in February
February might not be the best time of year action-wise, but we generally catch larger fish than in January, and the cold waters and diet of the fish during this time of year provide quality salmon fillets full of omega-3s. As time moves on in February, the fish generally get bigger as the more mature Chinook salmon filter into the Seattle area following baitfish in from the straits of Juan de Fuca. This also means a higher volume of fish, which means more fish to catch!
Tips to prepare you for February Fishing on The Puget Sound
- Dress warm - layers are great to have.
- Wearing insulated layers on top and bottom will help cut the chill.
- Prepare for colder temps than forecasted - it is often colder on the water than it is back at the Marina. Expecting 10 degrees cooler will be sufficient.
- Fishing can be slower than summer months, so come with realistic expectations and a good supply of patience.
- Be ready for the bite! When that bite does come, it could be a big one, so don't let the slower action take your focus away from the fishing.
