March King Salmon Fishing in Seattle/Tacoma

As March rolls around, we get glimpses of spring weather with sunny skies and warming temperatures, which bring spawning herring (bait fish) into the Puget Sound in abundance. Following those herring are hungry king salmon that are eager to fatten up for their summer migration up various rivers for their own spawning season.

The improving weather and abundance of salmon make March a great time to go fishing in the Seattle/Tacoma area!

Mixed Bag Salmon Fishing

Although mature king salmon are the primary target during March, there is also still a mixture of winter and spring Chinook in the Puget Sound at this time of year, which makes for some excellent days of fishing. The abundance of herring and sunny skies make the salmon hungry and willing participants, leading to some aggressive bites and lots of fish to catch when we find a feeding school of salmon.

During March, our fishing charters depart out of Tacoma in the southern part of the Puget Sound.

March Salmon Fishing Techniques

Adaptability is how I would characterize March fishing on The Sound, because every day changes as different fish filter through the area looking for their next meal. You never know what each day could bring!

Because of this, we use a variety of techniques to catch king salmon in March depending on the conditions. Mooching, jigging, and trolling are used interchangeably as we follow the fish and pay attention to the wind and tides. Be ready to learn a couple of different techniques on the water during March, as sometimes one will work better than the other.

Summary:

March is a great time to get out fishing with a group of friends or family as the weather warms up and creates an enjoyable environment. March is also a great time to learn salmon fishing techniques, as we generally use a couple of different techniques throughout the day.

As the month progresses, fishing generally gets more and more consistent leading into April, where the majority of the fish grow in size and the fishing gets even better.

April Outlook:

In April, we are starting up Seattle departures again (while still offering Tacoma departures). The much-anticipated Seattle opener should provide great action and lots of fish hitting the deck as it hasn’t been open since mid-November. Read more about April salmon fishing.
